A 2009 graduate of the William S. Boyd School of Law, Alina Shell has a long history of fighting for the rights of historically underrepresented members of society. From 2000 to 2007, she worked as the Officer Manager and Program Coordinator for the ACLU of Nevada, working alongside attorneys on  a variety of issues, including advocating for the rights of homeless people, the First Amendment rights of pamphleteers, and prisoners’ rights.

After leaving the ACLU, and while still in law school, Alina began working as a law clerk for the Federal Public Defenders for the District of Nevada (“FPD”) and discovered a passion for criminal defense. In 2009, she was hired by the FPD. At the FPD, she participated in trials and worked on direct appeals, briefing and arguing numerous cases before the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In her work, she tackled a broad range of issues, including challenges to sentencing decisions, fighting prosecutorial misconduct, and challenging the constitutionality of criminal statutes (including by raising First Amendment issues). Alina also developed expertise in defending white collar criminal cases, trial work, and pornography cases.

In addition to her zealous courtroom and appellate advocacy, Alina also found she had a talent for teaching. Alina participates in national training seminars for criminal defense attorneys, instructing attorneys on issues such as challenging career criminal designations, persuasive legal writing, and persuasive sentencing advocacy. She also provided training to local attorneys on issues pertinent to criminal defense.

In 2015, Alina left the FPD for the world of private practice. As an attorney at McLetchie Shell, LLC, Alina uses her appellate and advocacy skills to vigorously defend the interests of her clients in both civil and criminal cases. She has also expanded her areas of representation, including to return to the issues she worked on at the ACLU-NV: civil rights matters.
